This photography-focused journey takes you deep into northern Mongolia to meet the Tsaatan reindeer herders, explore the Darkhad Valley, and finish at the legendary Khovsgul Lake. Designed for photographers and cultural travelers, the tour offers authentic access to nomadic families, daily life with reindeer, dramatic landscapes, portraits, and night sky photography far from light pollution.
Is this tour suitable for photographers of all levels?
Yes. This tour is suitable for beginners, enthusiasts, and professional photographers. The itinerary is paced to allow enough time for composition, light changes, and interaction with local families.
What is the best season for this photography tour?
The best season is June to September, when access to the taiga is possible, reindeer are active, and night skies are clear enough for Milky Way photography.
How physically demanding is this tour?
This is a moderate-level adventure. Horse riding (4–6 hours) and remote conditions require reasonable fitness, but no technical skills are needed. Prior riding experience is helpful but not mandatory.
Will we ride horses to reach the reindeer herders?
Yes. Access to the Tsaatan camps is by horseback, guided by experienced local horsemen. All horses are calm and suitable for long-distance travel.
What type of accommodation should I expect?
Accommodation varies:
Hotels in Ulaanbaatar and Murun
Traditional teepees (orts) with reindeer herders
Ger camps or nomadic family stays
Facilities are basic in remote areas.
Are the reindeer herders comfortable with photography?
Yes. We work only with families who are familiar with visitors and photography. Respectful interaction is essential, and photos are taken with permission.
Will there be opportunities for Milky Way photography?
Yes. Weather permitting, there are excellent opportunities in the Darkhad Valley and taiga areas with minimal light pollution.
What camera equipment should I bring?
Recommended:
Wide-angle lens (14–24mm) for landscapes & Milky Way
Standard zoom (24–70mm)
Telephoto (70–200mm or longer)
Tripod and spare batteries (cold drains power)
Is electricity available during the tour?
Electricity is limited or unavailable in remote camps. We recommend power banks or solar chargers.
What kind of food is provided?
Meals are simple, local, and filling, including meat, dairy, rice, and bread. Special dietary needs can be accommodated with advance notice.
Is this tour safe?
Yes. The tour is led by experienced local guides. However, this is a remote region, and participants should be comfortable with basic wilderness conditions.
Can this itinerary be customized?
Absolutely. The itinerary can be adjusted for longer stays, private tours, or specific photography goals.
How do we reach Murun from Ulaanbaatar?
We use domestic flights, which save time and reduce road fatigue. Delays are possible due to weather.
Is this tour suitable for children or non-photographers?
This tour is designed primarily for photographers. Non-photographers are welcome but should be comfortable with long travel days and remote conditions.
